ASTM A53 GR. B refers to carbon steel pipes that comply with ASTM A53/A53M standards and are suitable for seamless and welded applications. There are three types:


Type F: furnace butt welded steel pipes (continuous furnace welding process, usually galvanized)

Type E: Resistance welded steel pipe (ERW process)

Type S: Seamless steel pipe (hot-rolled or cold drawn).


It is mainly used as a low-pressure pipeline for fluid transportation of water, oil, steam, gas, etc., or as a structural support for buildings, mechanical components, etc. Generally applicable from -29 ° C to+343 ° C, but it is recommended to use ASTM A106 Gr. B at high temperatures.

ASTM A53 Carbon Steel Pipe Manufacturing Process and Types


Seamless steel pipe (Type S):

  • Process: Hot rolling or cold drawing forming, no welds, suitable for high-pressure scenarios
  • Size range: outer diameter 1/8 "~24", wall thickness SCH 10~XXS

Welded steel pipe (Type E/F):

  • Type E (ERW): High frequency resistance welding, with strength close to seamless pipe
  • Type F (furnace welding): Continuous furnace welding, low cost, but only used for low-voltage galvanized pipes
  • Surface treatment: Galvanized to improve corrosion resistance (commonly seen in Type F)

ASTM A53 Carbon Steel Pipe Selection Precautions

  • Pressure and temperature: Seamless pipes have a higher pressure bearing capacity than welded pipes, and materials such as A106 or A333 need to be used at high temperatures (>343 ° C) or low temperatures (<-29 ° C).
  • Corrosion environment: Galvanized pipes (Type F) are suitable for humid environments, but it should be noted that the welding area is prone to corrosion. If they need to be used in severely corrosive environments, it is recommended to use stainless steel (such as ASTM A312) or add coating protection.
  • Cost trade-off: Welded pipes (Type E/F) are priced lower than seamless pipes and have lower costs, making them suitable for use in low-pressure and non critical systems.


Comparison between ASTM A53 GR. B and other materials
